A growing number of the strongest hires on Justin Nelson’s team at JP Morgan never took a single finance course in college. Nelson, who serves as Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, has noticed that some of his most capable advisors majored in psychology instead.
“Half of what we do every day is focused on finance and results but the rest is psychology and how to positively interact with people,” Nelson explained. That observation shapes how he builds his twenty person team, which manages more than $15 billion in client assets.
Reading People, Not Just Portfolios
Wealth management, in Justin Nelson’s view, is rarely a pure numbers exercise. Clients arrive with questions about inheritance, family businesses, and generational wealth, topics that carry emotional weight far beyond a spreadsheet. Advisors who understand human behavior, he argues, are better equipped to guide those conversations than advisors who only understand markets.

He credits his own multidisciplinary education, chemistry and economics at Tufts University followed by an MBA at Columbia University, with teaching him to draw connections across fields rather than sticking to one lane.
