The Virginia Supreme Court recently stood up for the right to free speech. Peter Vlaming was a teacher who worked in the West Point School Board for seven years. He was fired because he would not use a student’s preferred pronouns. He went before the school board and said that using pronouns that did not correspond with one’s gender violated his conscience.
Peter tried to compromise by saying that he would use the student’s preferred name. That was not good enough for the school board. Fortunately, he was able to get help from the Alliance Defending Freedom.
Chris Schandevel is the senior counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom. He represented Peter in this lawsuit. He stated that Peter was a teacher who had a passion for teaching. He also stated that the students liked Peter. Additionally, Chris stated that the government or school board should not be allowed to punish someone for refusing to say something that is not true.
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled in favor of Peter. They stated that the Virginia Constitution protects diversity of thought and free speech. He also stated that the school board violated Peter’s religious beliefs. Chris further argued that the school board was trying to force their beliefs about gender ideology on Peter. He also stated that the Virginia Supreme Court did the right thing by standing and protecting Peter’s rights.
Shawn Voyles is another attorney who works for Alliance Defending Freedom. He also defended Peter in this case. Alliance Defending Freedom has over 5,000 lawyers who have defended people in various cases.
