Flutterwave Spearheads Cybercrime Research Center in Partnership with EFCC

Flutterwave, a trailblazing Nigerian fintech company, has joined forces with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to establish a cutting-edge Cybercrime Research Center in Nigeria. This strategic partnership aims to intensify the battle against internet crime, fortify the security of online business transactions, and provide a sustainable lifeline to the nation’s youth.

The collaboration was formally sealed on June 14 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja between Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola and EFCC Secretary Mohammadu Hammajoda. The event was graced by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, who expressed his appreciation for the partnership and commended Flutterwave for its impressive strides and expansive reach across Africa.

The Cybercrime Research Center, set to be established at the new EFCC Academy, will serve as a hub for advanced research, training, and capacity building in the fight against financial crimes. The center will focus on several key areas, including advanced fraud detection and prevention, collaborative research and policy development, youth empowerment and capacity building, technological advancement, and resource enablement.

Olugbenga Agboola, the driving force behind Flutterwave, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to promoting secure and safe transactions. He stated, “This initiative underscores our commitment to creating a fraud-free financial ecosystem and leading the charge in safeguarding transactions across Africa. We applaud the EFCC’s relentless efforts to combat internet fraud and other illicit activities in the financial sector.”

The establishment of the Cybercrime Research Center comes at a critical juncture when the prevalence of financial fraud threatens the stability and trust in economic systems. As the payments ecosystem continues to evolve, the need for robust measures to combat cybercrime has never been more pressing.

The center will develop and implement cutting-edge technologies to detect and prevent financial fraud, offering comprehensive training for law enforcement and industry professionals to combat modern financial crimes effectively. It will also engage in collaborative research and policy development, fostering a platform for exchanging ideas and best practices between the public and private sectors.

Moreover, the Cybercrime Research Center will focus on youth empowerment and capacity building, providing high-end training and research opportunities for 500 youths and equipping them with the skills necessary to navigate and excel in the digital economy. This aspect of the initiative highlights Flutterwave’s commitment to combating financial crimes and creating sustainable opportunities for the nation’s youth.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, noting, “The EFCC is impressed with the strides and expanse of Flutterwave across Africa. This partnership marks a significant leap forward in our efforts to combat financial crimes and ensure a secure financial landscape for Nigerians. The Cybercrime Research Center will significantly enhance our capabilities to prevent, detect, and prosecute financial crimes.”

As Flutterwave continues to make significant strides in the African fintech landscape, this partnership with the EFCC marks a new chapter in the fight against cybercrime. By combining their expertise and resources, these organizations are poised to create a safer and more secure financial ecosystem, benefiting Nigeria and the entire African continent. Establishing the Cybercrime Research Center represents a significant step forward in safeguarding the integrity of online transactions and empowering the youth to thrive in the digital age.
