Michael Polk Reflects on Life After Newell Brands

Retirement did not suit Michael Polk for long. After stepping down from Newell Brands in 2019, capping a run that saw the company’s enterprise value climb from around five billion dollars to more than fifteen billion, he found himself drawn back into the corporate world within a year.

A Short-Lived Exit

Michael Polk’s departure from Newell Brands, the consumer goods company behind brands such as Rubbermaid and Sharpie, marked the end of a career that also included senior roles at Kraft Foods and Unilever. Yet by 2020, Polk had agreed to lead Implus LLC, a much smaller, privately held fitness accessories business owned by Berkshire Partners. The timing put him directly in the path of the pandemic, which forced Implus to rethink its operations almost immediately.

Choosing a Different Kind of Challenge

Rather than easing back into a familiar public-company role, Michael Polk Newell Brands chose an organization that operates on a different scale entirely, with sixteen brands and a global footprint but nowhere near the resources of his previous employer. He has spoken about the shift as a kind of homecoming, one that reconnected him with the marketing and sales work he found most engaging earlier in his career, before senior leadership pulled him toward resource allocation and organizational strategy.

At Implus, Michael Polk works far more closely with his team than he did while running Newell Brands, engaging directly in the choices that shape the business rather than delegating them through several layers of management. His path from a household-name public company to a lesser-known private one has not been the conventional wind-down many executives choose. Instead, it appears to have given him a renewed sense of purpose heading into this stage of his career, one built on proximity to the work rather than distance from it, and one he does not seem inclined to trade back for a bigger title.
