Richard Liu Qiangdong; A Serial Entrepreneur

Richard Liu is a serial entrepreneur and one of China’s best-known angel investors. Richard Liu Qiandong is the founder of Joyo.com, China’s leading online bookstore. Liu currently invests in startups in the U.S., Europe, and Asia through Zhenfund, which he founded in 2009 with 36 million dollars from his company’s IPO proceeds. He’s also the founder and chairman of China’s first angel investor organization, Founder 500, and the founder of the venture capital fund Viomi Capital. Liu firmly believes in putting one’s mouth where his money is: “I firmly believe that you should invest in what you know.”

In December 2013, Qiangdong Liu partnered with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). He holds three degrees: an MBA from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; a B.S. in Computer Science from Tsinghua University; and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Peking University. He also has an M.A. in Applied Mathematics from the University of British Columbia and a B.A. in Computer Science from Tsinghua University. He was named a BRIC Pioneer by BRIC Capital, a Goldman Sachs investment group that focuses on emerging markets.

Qiangdong Liu has been named one of Silicon Valley Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” for two consecutive years (2012 and 2013). In 2012, Qiangdong was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for China.

Liu Qiangdong is married to Cynthia Li, an early team member at Joyo.com, one of China’s leading online bookstores. They have two children, a boy, and a girl. Liu enjoys reading novels and playing basketball. His favorite book is The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu, and he likes to listen to alternative rock music by Coldplay, U2, and Oasis.

Liu is a film producer and investor in Hollywood films such as “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “And Crazy Rich Asians.”

He is also the producer of “Everybody Knows,” the first Chinese film made for China’s New Year’s Day and released in 2012 in Chinese theaters. See related link for more information.
