After decades of success as an investment banker and later real estate executive, Anilesh Ahuja still considers himself “a workaholic.” He recently said in an interview that the ventures he pursues in real estate and dealing in the Bio-Tech sector keep him “working 24/7.”
That’s just the way he likes it.
Anilesh Ahuja was born in the massive city of Mumbai, India, and lived there until his 14th year. That’s when his father opted to take his family to America. Anilesh suddenly found himself in a small Vermont town in a sparsely populated area with a cool climate.
His father might as well have resettled his family on Mars! That’s how different Vermont seemed from Mumbai to the young mind of Anilesh. While dealing with that first blow of culture shock, Anilesh was then enrolled in an elite prep school where he joined lots of other “white American boys” who were culturally and even physically different from him.
Yet a further challenge was his father’s decision to bump him up from Grade 9 to Grade 10 because of his excellent grades. Now Anilesh was one of the youngest, smallest and only brown-skinned students in the sophomore class.
He powered through, however, and his superb academic performance got him accepted to the Ivy League –- the University of Pennsylvania. This proved to be the key step he needed to land a job on Wall Street where he enjoyed more than 20 years of success in investment banking and trading.
Before moving on to real estate, Anilesh Ahuja was named to a top executive position at Deutsche Bank.
