Kelcy Warren Gives Back

You can tell a lot about a person by seeing with which philanthropies he associates. This is absolutely the case with Kelcy L. Warren. With a degree in Civil Engineering, he joined Endevco a small Gas and Oil Company in his home state of Texas. His job there was to deal with the commercial side of the business in energy development.

Kelcy Warren understands the meaning of gratitude. After a disastrous first year at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), Warren returned home humbled but ready to change his direction. For his year back at home Kelcy Warren worked hard and was able to put away additional funds to be able to reenter UTA the next year. During the year of his return, Warren was fortunate to have an engineering professor named Dr. Syed Qasim who was aware of Warren’s academic history. Kelcy Warren strongly encouraged his student to apply to do a research project with the National Science Foundation. Kelcy applied and received a scholarship. Eventually he won the award for his project which dealt with methane gas production.

After a three-year stint with Lone Star Gas Company, he left to join Endevco. About a decade later Warren and a partner acquired Endevco and changed its name to Cornerstone Natural Gas. Four years would pass, and they sold the company and Kelcy Warren co-founded and eventually became Chairman of Energy Transfer.

After achieving success with Energy Transfer Warren became involved in the philanthropy arena. In gratitude to and in honor of the engineering professor who gave him a direction and a mission for his life’s work, Dr. Qasim, Warren set up an endowment at UTA. After receiving the Horatio Alger award, he determined to learn more about that scholarship and spend more time with young students. Not content with these philanthropic endeavors alone he led a group of donor to fund a park he named after his son, called the Klyde Warren Park in Dallas, Texas which is recognized today as one of three most successful urban parks. Kelcy Warren has succeeded in his industry but he works hard to participate in philanthropic activities that allow him to share that success with others.
