Football club ownership and development is in the blood of the Pozzo family. It started when Gianpaolo Pozzo bought the low division Udinese Calcio football club in Udine, Italy in 1986. Driven by a passion for the team to succeed and a commitment to the community in which it is located, in three seasons Gianpaolo Pozzo used the profit from the family’s tool business to help Udinese club overcome financial difficulties and go all the way to the Champions League from Serie B. Gino Pozzo has followed his father’s example and helped teams in Spain and the United Kingdom go from the bottom to the top football leagues in the world.
Committed To Success
At 18 years old, Gino Pozzo went to the U.S. to go to college. After graduating from Harvard University with a master’s degree, he married a Catalan woman and moved to Barcelona, Spain. While there, he bought the Granada football club. At the time, Granada was struggling in the third division and was €12 million in debt. Using his family’s unique scouting-driven model, signing good players and improving the club’s operations, in two years Granada Football Club was in Spain’s Primera Liga. The club had not enjoyed that level of success in 35 years.
Moving To The United Kingdom
After spending 20 years in Spain leading Granada FC to unprecedented success, in 2012 Gino Pozzo purchased the struggling Watford Football Club, a lackluster lower-division football team. To get completely involved in rebuilding the team and supporting the local community, he moved his wife and children to London in 2013.
Within four years, Watford FC was promoted to the Premier League, many consider this the most prestigious football league in the world. Today, Gino Pozzo is considered one of the best, most forward-thinking, football club owners in Europe. Visit this page for additional information.
